The 72 Angels of the Shemhamephorash

The Shemhamephorash is the seventy-two-letter name of God, drawn from three verses in Exodus 14 by Kabbalistic combinatorial reading. From this Name, seventy-two angels are derived, each governing a specific quality of divine activity in the world. Medieval Kabbalistic in origin, anchored in figures like Cordovero and the Lurianic tradition, predating the Western occult repackaging by centuries. The Watchers

The rebel angels of 1 Enoch, the Book of Jubilees, and the broader Enochic literature. They descended in the days of Jared, took human wives, and taught humanity forbidden arts. Their offspring were the Nephilim. The Christian Bible later excluded most of this material, but the Ethiopic Church preserved it, and 1 Enoch survived in the Ge'ez canon. This course works through the Enochic texts directly and traces the Watcher tradition from second-temple Jewish origins through medieval reception.
